Product Description
Connecting links (or master links) join the ends of a roller chain, while offset links (or half links) adjust chain length by adding or removing half a pitch, often to create an odd number of links, but they have lower strength than standard links, so using two-pitch offset links or endless chains is often better for high loads. Connecting links use clips, pins, or cotters, while offset links shift plates by half a link's width, providing flexibility but reducing fatigue life.
Connecting Links (Master Links)
Purpose: To join the two ends of a roller chain to form a complete loop.
Types:
Spring Clip: Common for smaller chains, uses a clip.
Cotter Pin/Spring Pin: For larger chains, secured with pins.
Tap Fit: Stronger, designed with no strength reduction.
Strength: Can be as strong as the chain if factory-riveted (endless configuration), but standard types can have 0-20% strength reduction.
Offset Links (Half Links)
Purpose: To achieve precise chain lengths, especially when an odd number of links is needed, by adding half a pitch.
Types:
One-Pitch Offset Link (OL): A single link that shifts the chain by half a pitch; has significantly lower strength (around 65% of chain strength).
Two-Pitch Offset Link (2POL): Combines a roller link and an offset link, offering 100% of the chain's strength and better fatigue performance.
Usage: Used for adjustments and repairs, but generally discouraged for high-stress applications due to strength loss in single-pitch types.
